In this web broadcast, Gareth Young describes his career path and opportunities that led to his current role as the principal with Abaxas Business Services. He also shares some key advice to individuals and companies planning or involved in acquisitions or exit strategies in today’s economy.

Gareth also provides some interesting information to the CFOradio audience about the valuations that business owners preparing to sell need to know. Prior to Abraxas Mr. Young ran finanSight, a firm he founded that provided financial and operational services to start-ups and small businesses, including training, organizational consulting, and assistance with state tax credits. Mr. Young also was Executive Director of Corporate Development for BellSouth Corporation for fifteen years. In that position, he was responsible for developing and executing business expansion strategies for BellSouth through mergers and acquisitions, partnerships, and other transactions. Gareth began his career at Deloitte, where he spent seven years serving diverse clients in industries including banking, retail, paper and printing, and light engineering, as well as being Deloitte’s facilitator for first their UK national training group, regional training director in the U.S.

Gareth is a Chartered Accountant in the UK, has worked as an audit manager in the UK and the U.S., and has received numerous awards, including the Elijah Watt Sells Award for the C.P.A. exam. He is a graduate of Jesus College, Oxford, in the UK, with an M.A. in mathematics. He is also an author, whose first novel was published in 2009.

Mark joined SAP in 2002 and has held a number of positions with the company including chief operating officer (COO) of Business Operations for SAP Americas. In his role as COO, Mark was responsible for the company’s shared services organizations, including Value Engineering, Solution Engineering, Industry Solutions, and Sales Operations. In his role as CFO for the Americas region reporting directly to the CFO of SAP AG, Werner Brandt, Mark was instrumental in leading SAP Americas’ transformation over a five-year period, resulting in revenue growth and an increase in operating margin rate. During this period, Mark implemented a robust risk management process and led the company’s compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley. Mark was responsible for all financial, legal, real estate, Americas government relations, and contracts, while leading the transition team in the Americas for acquisition integration.

The company also provides multi-brand, specialty catalog retail services. The company was founded in 1978 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, with offices in Atlanta, Baltimore, Maryland and Ozark, Missouri.

Thornton talks about the diversity and challenges of the finance function for a firm dealing with multiple brands. In this situation, the finance role must be flexible and adaptable to bring the same level of consistency, continuity, performance and results to meet the diverse range of financial requirements applicable to brands at different stages of growth in a variety of markets. Thornton leads the Finance/Accounting, IT and HR departments for Astral Brands.

Miles Properties and 12 of its affiliates filed voluntary petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy code.  Jim has worked with 6 additional entities that operated in Chapter 11, including US Airways.

Mike TarrantMike Tarrant is the Treasurer of the Georgia Cancer Foundation.  Having been in finance all his career, he specialized very early on in the Healthcare industry.  Mike has broad experience of leading a key aspect of finance, that of financial planning.  He began his career as a “para-planner” learning the ropes from the ground up and except for one year at a bank, he has worked as a Financial Planner his entire career.  While this can be a role focused on the individual, it is also a key role for the corporation and for the CFO. 

In a career spanning 20 years, Mike has been affected by cancer and through his leadership, the Georgia Cancer Foundation has developed and grown.  However, in today’s climate, many non-profits today have suffered from a reduction in grants and government funding as well as a decrease in private donations, the Georgia Cancer Foundation being one of them.  Listen to the show about being the “Treasurer”–in other words–the CFO of a non-profit.

Eric is the Director of Investor Relations at Winn-Dixie, having held Investor Relations positions in a variety of international companies including Novelis Inc. and Alcan Inc.  Through his leadership of investor relations functions, he has helped companies who have had some complex situations including financial restatement and significant merger activity not only in the US but in Canada.  He has a broad experience of investor relations functions of companies.  Having started his career in the finance function, Eric has coordinated with the investment community and companies through growth, down-sizing and spinning off entire companies, impacting several thousand people.

Today Eric is responsible for leading the investor relations program and developing a comprehensive communication strategy to effectively reach the investment community of Winn-Dixie and was recently nominated to Institutional Investors, as the “Top Investor Relations Officer” for the food and drug industry by Barclays Capital Inc.
